We are excited to announce that we are updating our name from Comlink Midwest to Comlink Solutions as well as giving our logo a refresh. As a family-owned and operated company, since the beginning, our mission has been to provide the highest quality utility construction, fiber optic, and wireless network solutions to our partners. Over the years, these partnerships have included all sorts of industries including telecommunications, utility, municipalities/government, and energy.

As we continue to grow and expand into new territories, we are updating our name to one that better suits the work we do and the communities we serve: Comlink Solutions.

2019 Governor’s Workplace Safety Award – Outstanding Achievement

We are very happy to announce that Comlink Midwest has received the Governor’s Workplace Safety Award for excellence in workplace health and safety for the second consecutive year . It was awarded as part of the 2020 MN Safety & Health Conference on October 19 and 20. Due to COVID-19, the event was held virtually this year, and the Minnesota Safety Council teamed up with the South Dakota Safety Council to provide this live experience online.

About the Governor’s Workplace Safety Award

Applicants must submit workplace accident/injury data for the previous three years to be compared with national statistics relative to their industry. Along with this information, judges will assess the company’s progress in implementing a comprehensive safety program to determine if they will receive an award or not.

Award Levels

Winners of the award are recognized at three levels:

Meritorious Achievement : Incidence rates better than the industry average for at least three years and a score between 50 and 74 on the 100-point Safety Program Evaluation Scorecard .
Outstanding Achievement : Continuing improvement and/or furtherance of an already outstanding record with incident rates 51 to 90 percent better than the industry average and a score between 75 and 90 on the Safety Program Evaluation Scorecard.
Award of Honor : Incidence rates at least 91 percent better than the industry average and a score between 91 and 100 on the Safety Program Evaluation Scorecard, which is based largely on each company’s own employees’ feedback.

Companies must achieve the awards in order and cannot skip (i.e. must have earned the Meritorious Achievement Award to be considered for an Outstanding Achievement Award; must have earned an Outstanding Achievement Award to be considered for the Award of Honor).

Having received the Meritorious Achievement Award last year and Outstanding Achievement this year, Comlink Midwest remains on track for the ultimate goal: the Award of Honor. Hennepin County Active Traffic Management Project

Comlink Midwest is proud to be one of several contractors partnering with Hennepin County on a multi-phase, multi-year active traffic management project. The transportation upgrade involves constructing a fiber optic network in order to connect traffic signals together in one vast network. Once connected, each traffic signal can be automatically and remotely adjusted to address vehicle congestion.

Why ATMS

The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDot) concluded their 2018 Congestion Report with a list of strategies they plan to implement to address mobility issues. Among that list, Active Traffic Management (ATM) is the state’s top priority because of the increasing availability of technology and cost-effective systems, like traffic signs connected to a fiber optic network. Fiber optic cables enable the transmission of real-time road condition data for local management centers to increase peak capacity and maintain safe traffic density on major highways.

“When complete, this ATMS fiber system will allow the county’s signal network to ‘talk’ to each other for improved signal timing, reduction in delays, and better traffic flow and capacity in our county road system,” said Hennepin County Network Manager and project engineer Zach Rothstein. “It will also provide updates to a centralized traffic management office, which will allow us to troubleshoot problems and make adjustments in real time instead of having to send a technician to the intersection like we do today.”

What the Project Involves

Comlink foreman Nate Baumgarten heads one of the many crews working on the project. Comlink’s professionals are equipped to handle the various terrains in Hennepin County, from the concrete-laden downtown Minneapolis area to the rural suburbs full of nature reserves, expansive flat lands, rolling hills, and lakes.

The project requires strategic design and engineering while surveying the routes to assess the most effective placement. Installing the conduit and cable underground requires directional boring and excavating. Aboveground, aerial installation involves overlashing the fiber optic cable on existing aerial lines or installing new utility poles to accomplish the same outcome. Our team’s involvement includes:

Bringing conduit and fiber to each traffic signal.
Placing underground fiber line to tie traffic signals together.
Placing aerial fiber with a combination of underground directional drilling.
Overlashing onto existing aerial strand or placing a new poles and strand.
Entering existing traffic cabinets to place the fiber for the electronics.
Splicing and testing to terminate and provide a connection to the electronics.
Restoring soft and hard surfaces on each section.

The first phase of this project began in April of this year. It is quite the undertaking, as Hennepin County covers the largest area in the seven-county district.

“Comlink has been an excellent partner in this, constructing nearly 14 miles of the system,” Rothstein said. “The staff is friendly, professional, and has provided excellent customer service to both the county and the property owners along the fiber route. The communication and coordination provided by the Comlink team has been outstanding.”

2019 Governor’s Safety Award – Meritorious Achievement

We are thrilled to have been awarded for excellence in workplace safety and health during the Governor’s Safety Awards recognition ceremony on May 8, 2019 at the Mystic Lake Center. It was part of the 85th annual Minnesota Safety & Health Conference coordinated by the Minnesota Safety Council .

The Minnesota Safety Council was founded in 1928 and is dedicated to improving the quality of life in Minnesota by preventing unintentional injuries or illness. This non-profit helps businesses develop safety programs and strives to keep workers safe. The Minnesota Safety & Health Conference is one of the oldest and largest gathering of workplace safety and health professionals in the Upper Midwest, Great Lakes and northern regions.

Safety is a high priority at Comlink Midwest . I’ve joined a winning team who share four key traits that make winning possible in business and in the world of the elite Olympians.

Visualization

“Seeing is believing” right? This is a very critical part of the planning process and if you fail to plan, you plan to fail. Visualizing the task, goal or win is the first step to putting it on paper. Once you can see it, you can define the strategies, training and actions required to accomplish it.

Perseverance

Olympic athletes never give up and neither do successful businesses. You have to be prepared to weather a storm and stay the course. Perseverance is not only a required personal trait, but it includes picking the right team, coaches, mentors, colleagues and employees who are prepared to go for the gold together.

Adversity

No matter how hard it gets, successful people believe they will only become stronger by what doesn’t kill them (fade in Kelly Clarkson song here). Over the past several years Comlink Midwest has been working on cellular sites (FTTCS) by providing fiber optic solutions for cellular service providers in order to increase subscriber bandwidth, including 4G speeds. In the beginning of 2010 many of us began to notice the competition heating up between cellular providers. Smart phones have been taking over the cellular market with over 30% of the population using them. The applications are ever changing and the demand for more bandwidth is multiplying. Cell phone tower upgrades and new tower expansion has been something that we, at Comlink Midwest, have been consistently working on.
